It happened on Sunday, Sept. 22 at approximately 5 p.m. on Shady Knoll Lane, New Canaan Police said.
The dog owner was able to frighten the coyote and it dropped the dog. The dog suffered two punctures on the neck and ear, according to police.
It's the third reported incident in the southwestern section of New Canaan over the past month.
Pet owners are being urged by police to supervise their dogs, large or small and always have hazing tools on hand.
"Coyotes are being sighted routinely at Waveny Park, as well as the areas around the train tracks and the Merritt Parkway Greenway," New Canaan Police said.
